THE RENOWNED MOMBASA PORT

The port of Mombasa established in January 1978 is managed by the Kenya Ports Authority(KPA).It is a parastatal fully owned by the Kenyan government .The port comprises of Kilindini Barbour,Port Reitz,the Old Port,Port Tudor and the whole of the tidal waters encircling Mombasa island.The port is the gate way to east and central Africa and its busiest along the East African Coastline.

The Mombasa residents positively gain from the port in the following ways:

1.Creation of employment

Many Mombasa residents have been employed in the Port area through its operations.Large vessels operated by top shipping lines call on it on a regular basis to load and unload cargo .People from different careers are able to get employed and at least serve the Kenyan ports and earn a living from its operations.

2.Raised living standards 

The Mombasa Port is aimed at enabling environment for port operations and improving the livelihoods of people living around port premises.Developing small ports to promote fishing and regional trade .The coastal fishermen will intensely benefit from this.

3.Support of health institutions

Through KPA CSI health programme.The Mombasa residents will enjoy free health care from different hospitals funded by the ports health programme which will ease the residents from medical feee and free medical check ups

4 Education

The port in liason with the county government will help support the county medium to long term development agendas which will help ease the burden of school fees to parents and help more children access free education who come from poverty striken families.

5.Access to products 

Mombasa port serves as the market for agricultural products and different products shipped from different countries .Mombasa residents can easily link and get products direct when it arrival at the port in its fresh state from other different countries.
